" It’s a joy to be alone all day…"
With this line Andrew Connor's voice on the new Ghosty EP 'Five Short Minutes' flows over you, and with its quiet power completes the sound of the cd. The songwriting depth in this band is incredible and you see it in each song. You also see a side of the band that is not afraid of new ideas, whether it is a special hidden track with a remix of track 3 or a cover tune. Track 4, "Another Straight Sonnet", is a showcase of everything that makes Ghosty great except that it is not their song. Smooth, professional, and combined with vocals that could melt the heart of almost anyone. It really caught my attention. Without a doubt it is the favorite of this reviewer, which is a hard call to make considering how I feel about the other songs on this CD. The first time I heard them play this song live, all I could say was "F."

The only criticism I could make of this work would be that it almost comes across as restrained. The experience, ability, and desire of the band to create a certain sound may have clouded what could have been a more raw, emotional sound. The prime example of this is track 5 and their new version of "Faith" which was released on drummer Richard Gintowt's, 'ok Jones' cd earlier this year. There is a disparity between the vocals and the music which comes across as unbalanced, but does not take away entirely from the fact that it is still a great song. After all, this is music at its best: people doing it themselves and doing it well, with perhaps only a couple of missteps. Don’t miss Ghosty the next time they are live and I bet you will buy the CD and not even think about what I wrote in this review.
